whenever the idea that Cas was meant to die permanently in s7 comes up, I always think, “well, why did they do it like THAT?”
Were they just in such a rush to get to just-the-bros that they couldn’t give Cas a proper send-off?
For a character that’s been a major presence for so long, you give him an on-screen downward spiral. You make him the big bad for an entire season. THEN you give him a beautiful, redemptive, meaningful death.
You don’t just go, “Whoops! He’s not there anymore!”

While I agree that people are overreacting, I still say that Samulets significance lies primarily in Sam and Deans relationship, and in portraying the trust or lack of trust they hold for each other.

And while Cas did have it during s5, I think that was significant primarily because it was in a way placing Cas in Deans daddy dilemma of earlier seasons, especially since he was looking after God.
And that just goes to my point. That it has different significance for different characters. And if a fanartist wants to focus on one character over another, in what is a fairly open-ended piece of work, then what’s the problem?
Another level of significance that some fans see is that Dean giving Cas the amulet was part of their tentative, growing trust and partnership. And while I don’t really buy into it myself, I think it’s valid? So if someone wants to focus on that over the Sam/Dean aspect of it then, again… what’s the problem?
Now I want to write fanfic of Dean and Cas having sex while Cas wears the amulet just to watch people take a hairy.
… while in the backseat of the Impala, because there are Wincest shippers who are ridiculously possessive of the Impala too.
It’s one thing to be upset with Destiel shippers for “making everything about their ship” when, for example, it’s reducing Charlie/Gilda down to a ~parallel~, thereby de-centring canon sexual minorities from their own story for the sake of a non-canon dudebro pairing.
It’s quite another to get upset at fans for using canon elements in their fanworks. The amulet is important to Dean and Cas had it in his possession for a long time in canon. Cas rides around with Dean in the Impala in canon.
These are simply objects in the SPN universe that people assign varying levels of significance to. The fact that different fans handle them differently is just a fact. And frankly, not one that makes much sense to get upset over.
So I found the emotional content of the episode to be pretty sub-par.
But I’m glad that Cas will be around next season.

Basically, if the SamnDean content tonight moves them forward both relationship-wise and as individual characters, I’ll be happy.
If it’s the same old exclusive I’d-die-for-yous stuff I’ll just be like, “Bored now. Where’s Cas?”
The fact that I’m more worried about the fandom’s reaction to the finale than the finale itself probably says something.
I could really go for some last-minute spoilers right about now.
Despite the fact that a few of the mytharc episodes have been disappointing, I am actually looking forward to the finale quite a bit.
Holy fuck, but I do wish that Dean and Cas would get the chance to just relax and be friends with each other for once.
